Football: Tiquan Gilmore of Torres named Northern League MVP

Junior running back Tiquan Gilmore of the Torres Toros was named Northern League MVP. Gilmore rushed for 3,266 yards on 217 carries for a 15.1 average and 33 touchdowns. He had 4,171 all-purpose yards and 38 total touchdowns. Defensively he had 4 interceptions.

Gilmore in his sophomore year was selected 1st Team All-Northern League with 2174 total yards and 20 touchdowns.

The Torres Toros after coming off a 2015 0-6 Northern League record and 2-7 overall; were 4-2 in league and 7-3 overall. They were seeded #3 in the CIF L.A. City Section's Division III playoffs and reached the quarterfinals before losing to Hollywood last Friday night.

Spotlight: Tiquan Gilmore

The TORRES TOROS defeated the Marshall Barristers 40-7 last Friday night and are now 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the Northern League. Entering the game standout junior running back #7 Tiquan Gilmore had 1719 yards rushing (245.6 per game avg.) and 20 touchdowns. Against Marshall Gilmore broke away for 3 rushing TD's of 83, 75, and 76 yards and added a 50 yard punt return for a TD.

Gilmore at 5'10 170 lbs runs a 4.48 40 yard dash. In his sophomore year Gilmore was selected 1st Team All-Northern League with 2174 total yards and 20 touchdowns. Second year head coach Charles Burnley on Gilmore..."on any play anything can happen" and refers to him as an "incredible talent".

Players like #4 Rodrigo Francisco (Sr) QB; #1 Andrew Morales (Jr) RB/CB; #67 Jacob Ochoa (Sr) R-Tackle; and #52 Bryan Moreno (Sr) MLB also have contributed to the Toros success on the field. With no youth football in the area most of their players step onto the football field for the first time in high school.

The Toros have wins against Verdugo Hills, Belmont, New Design Watts, Wilson, and Marshall. They will travel to Sotomayor on Friday and will end the regular season at home against league undefeated Lincoln Tigers on November 4th.

Northern League Football to Kick-off the 2016 Season Friday Night

EAGLE ROCK - Division I (2015: 6-0 NL, 6-5 overall, 1st in NL)
The Eagles are the Northern League Champions for the last 4 years and have a 22 game winning streak in Northern League competition. 2015 was their first year in the CIF L.A. City Section Division I. They made the playoffs as the #16 seed and were eliminated in the 1st Round of the playoffs by #1 seed Narbonne Gauchos.

The Eagles will start the season on the road against the Fillmore Flashers of the Frontier League in the CIF Southern Section.

Other non-league opponents include Hawkins (Div. II; Coliseum League), Hollywood (Div III; Central League) Roosevelt (Div. I; Eastern League).

Northern League play starts on September 23rd

FRANKLIN - Division III (2015: 3-3 NL, 5-7 overall, 4th in NL)
The Panthers advanced made the playoffs with a #12 seed. They upset #5 Legacy in the first round and lost to #4 seed West Adams in the quarterfinals.

The Panthers start the season at home against the Hollywood Shieks (Div. III) of the Central League.

Other non-league opponents include Van Nuys (Div. III; Valley Mission league), Bell (Div. II; Eastern League), and Bernstein (Div. II; Central League).

LINCOLN - Division II (2015: 5-1 NL, 5-6 overall, 2nd in NL)
The Tigers finished runner-up in the NL and made the playoffs in Division II with a #13 seeding. They were defeated by the #4 seed Canoga Park in Round 1.

The Tigers start the season on the road against the Huntington Park Spartans (Div. II) of the Eastern League.

Other non-league opponents include Belmont (Div. III; Central League), Grant (Div. II; East Valley League), and University (Div. II; Western League).

MARSHALL - Division III (2015: 2-4 NL, 3-8 overall, 5th in NL)
The Barristers made the playoffs as the #14 seed in Division III. They were defeated by the #3 seed Manual Arts.

Marshall starts the season at home against the Belmont Sentinels (Div. III) of the Central League.

Other non-league opponents include Hamilton (Div. I; Western League), Kearny (CIF San Diego Section), and Contreas (Div. III; Central League).

SOTOMAYOR - Division III (2015: 0-6 NL, 2-7 overall, 7th in NL)
The Wolves are coming into their 4th year of football. They have not had a home game in the last couple of seasons due to problems with their field. They will have 7 home games this year on their new field.

Sotomayor starts the season with a home game against the Village Christian Crusaders of the Olympic League in the CIF Southern Section.

Other non-league opponents include Hoover (Pacific League; Southern Section), Peninsula (Bay League; Southern Section), and Mendez (Div. III; Metro League).

TORRES - Division III (2015: 1-5 NL, 1-9 overall, 6th in NL) The Toros are coming into their 6th year of football and their 3rd year in the NL.

Torres starts the season on the road against the Verdugo Hills Dons (Div. II) of the East Valley League.

Other non-league opponents include Hollywood (Div III; Central League), Belmont (Div. III; Central League) and Rivera (Div. III; Exposition League).

WILSON - Division III (2015: 4-2 NL, 6-5 overall, 3rd in NL)

The Mules made the playoffs as #11 seed in Division III. They were defeated in the first round to #6 Marquez.

Wilson starts the season at home against the Roybal Titans (Div. III) of the Central League.

Other non-league opponents include Santee (Div. II; Exposition League), Monroe (Div. III; East Valley League), and Alhambra (Southern Section; Almnont League).

Highland Park was celebrating their 75th year in 1963. The following is a transcribed article about Franklin High School's beginnings.

First Franklin High relied on tax vote; so history repeats in 1963

Tax weary Highland Park residents back in 1914 almost killed any chances of a new high school here, but a last minute newspaper campaign swung enough votes to gain approval of the school bonds that year and put Franklin High School on the planning boards. The citizens of Northeast LA had just been asked to approve a new power bond issue the same year, and according to the May 9, 1914 issue of the News-Herald "a reaction among voters is likely to occur, and the vote will be very light."

HUNT FOR SITE

However, voters finally came through with an OK for the school bonds, and local school leaders began searching for an appropriate site for the new Highland Park school. Locations were suggested all the way from Avenue 43 to Avenue 60, and including the buildings that once housed Occidental College at Ave. 50 and N. Figueroa St. (now Angelus Chevrolet). Up to 1915, high school pupils in the Highland Park area attended Lincoln High School, Los Angeles High School, and Polytechnic High School or, by paying tuition, they attended South Pasadena High School. Since Los Angeles High was soon to move to its present site on West Olympic Blvd., Franklin High School was projected to provide more accessible school facilities for this area. At that time there was considerable opposition on the grounds that this area would never adequately support a high school. In fact, the architect's authorization was "to prepare plans for a school with an ultimate attendance of 600 pupils."

DOORS OPEN

Franklin's doors first opened on February 7, 1916, in half of the second floor of the old Monte Vista Elementary School building.On April 3, the school moved into the only building then completed. From May to July, the 225 pupils and 15 teachers "rattled around" in the 29 rooms provided in the two original buildings. Within a year, however, the enrollment had risen to 350 and in 2 years the original enrollment had exactly doubled. The peak in attendance was reached in February, 1927, when the enrollment was 2,460 pupils and 125 faculty members.
In September, 1927, Eagle Rock High School and Luther Burbank Junior High were opened, cutting Franklin's attendance to 1900. Soon afterwards, Florence Nightingale and Washington Irving Junior High Schools opened and took the remainder of Franklin's ninth grade.

ENROLLMENT TODAY

Today the total enrollment is approximately 1670 students, and the faculty consists of 78
teachers. This is the Franklin that was to have "an ultimate attendance of 600 pupils!"
During its 47 years, Franklin has had 6 principals, the first of them being Charles B. Moore, He "reigned" from the opening day to July, 1934. Robert J. Teall then took over the responsibilities of Franklin until his retirement in June, 1945. Mr. Moore's second successor was Ralph E Winchester, He retired in 1950. Succeeding him was John C. Holt, Franklin's leader from 1951 to 1956. "A prince and a pal" was the way students described Earl B. Barnett. Mr. Barnett was Franklin's principal until 1960 when he was transferred downtown to serve the Board of Education as Administrator of Secondary Assignments. Succeeding him was Franklin's present principal, Joseph S. Herman. Miss Edith M. Hodgkins, who had been the girls' vice principal since the opening of school, retired on June 10. 1941. Mrs. Evelyn Smith, the present girls' vice principal, was formerly a teacher at Franklin. She assumed her duties as vice principal in 1961.

'PRESS' IS BORN

Until 1917 the Franklin Press as a separate paper did not yet exist. In spite of repeated attempts to publish a paper either at school or away from school, lack of funds and support blocked all efforts. For a while the staff and Journalism I students were filling two columns in the Highland Park Herald, and one or more columns in the Garvanza Eagle. Every country, every institution (including schools) has its "golden age." Many factors combine to produce such a period, chief of which are the enthusiasm of youth and the contagion of success. The R.O.T.C. drill team start-ed Franklin's "golden age" by winning first place in the all city contest of 1921. Next year the team and band both won first places. As a result, the Franklin Band was asked to represent Washington and Jefferson University in the New Year's Day game in Old Tournament Park. For this service, there was a cash payment of $100, transportation to and from Pasadena, tickets to the game, and dinner at the Vista del Arroyo Hotel.

Next year, in 1923, the band represented Penn State in similar fashion in the Rose Bowl. For eight years the Franklin Band appeared in the parade until the association initiated a policy of inviting only bands whose communities entered floats.

ATHLETIC PROWESS

In 1922 Franklin's athletic teams were admitted to the City League over the protests of Polytechnic and Los Angeles High Schools. They felt they would be "slowed down" by Franklin's admission. Franklin's football team answered this objection by tying Polytechnic, 6 to 6, and defeating L.A. High 13-6, for the city championship! That spring, the baseball team had won the Southern and Central California championship to Sacramento. Then the school "took fire" and, during the next two years, rarely lost a contest in which it engaged. Cups and banners galore filled the trophy cases for excellence in music, athletics, dramatics, typing and stenography, declamation, oratory, and scholarship. It reached its climax with Don Tyler's sensational victory in the oratorical content of the Constitution at Washington. D.C., on June 6, 1924. In 1932, this honor was also won by another Franklin student, Lucille Goldsmith, a record attained by no other school. Franklin's 1948 football team, coached by Frank Hess, returned to become city champions, the throne they vacated In 1947. Franklin rolled in five straight victories including a 13-0 conquest of Narbonne in the Milk Bowl The Panthers also made up for the 1947 defeat by toppling the Lincoln Tigers 33-6.

The honor of becoming Franklin's first Homecoming Queen was bestowed on Nancy Anderson in 1956. She was crowned by Nick Ruggio, captain of the football team. The Panthers had a winless season in 1951, although a few individual standouts brightened an otherwise dull record. Co-captains Claude Doty and Mike Masterman sparked the Panther campaign.

1963 CAMPAIGN

This year Franklin's Varsity got off to a bad start by losing their first practice game to Hoover with a final score of 33-12. Hopes are high that the League games will be much better. In 1961, plans were being made to tear down the library, main and annex buildings to make way for Highland Park's first school skyscraper. Today all that remain are the shops, the auditorium, and the science buildings. Bungalows were erected on Irvington Place and on the girls' field during the summer of 1961. This made the Phaeons Class of S'62 the last to graduate in the old structure and the Atlantisians of W'63 the first to graduate from "bungalow high." Sometime In 1965, Franklin's new building should be ready for occupancy. It will be a four story building with the overpass across Ave. 54 leading from the boys' gym to the second floor of the main building.

Remember the Plumbers?

FIRST ROSABELL TEAM—What baseball fan in Highland Park could ever forget the famed Rosabell Plumbers, one of if not the greatest semi-pro teams in the United States. Owned by Charley Pedrotti, the team was launched in 1936 and comprised entirely of former Franklin stars. During the first season the team won 51 games, lost only two. The Northern League in the playoffs

Water Polo - Eagle Rock is the only "local" team that competes in Water Polo. They are in the Eastern League. Eagle Rock finished 8-0 and are the Eastern League Champions. They have a record of 104-17 in the last 5 years and going for their 5th consecutive City Championship. Final Eastern League standings

#1 seed Eagle Rock defeated #16 Garfield 13-3 in the first round of the LA City Division I playoffs. They will face #9 Venice in the Quarterfinals on Wednesday Feb 17th at 3pm @ Eagle Rock. Girls Basketball: Marshall snaps Eagle Rock's 51-game NL win streak

January 24, 2016

In an exciting basketball game at Eagle Rock last Friday night, the Marshall Barristers ended the Eagles 51-game Northern League winning streak by a score of 39-35. The last Eagles loss in NL play was to the Wilson Mules in the 2010-11 season. That season was also the last time Marshall defeated Eagle Rock.

The Barrister's were led by Faith Magbero with four 3-pointers; 19 total points, 11 rebounds, and 4 steals. Alexis Hatcher and Kahira Embry added 9 points each. Alexis was 7 for 9 at the free throw line.

Eagle Rock and Marshall will face-off again at Marshall on February 10th at 4pm.

Northern League Football Recap

October 18, 2015

Eagle Rock won their homecoming game against the Marshall Barristers 26-7 for their 19th straight league victory. The Eagles are now 3-0 in Northen League competition and Marshall falls to 1-2. This coming Friday Eagle Rock will travel to Torres to face the 0-3 Torros.

Prior to the homecoming game ERHS inducted three athletes into Eagle Rock Sports Hall of Fame: Dan Cantore S'64; Tina Epps 1986; Kenny Lee 1972

The Franklin Panthers defeated the Torres Toros 49-18 to spoil the Toros homecoming. Franklin is now 3-1 in league play and Torres drops to 0-3. Panther QB Mario Bobadilla passed for 18 of 29 for 236 yards and 3 touchdowns. Bobadilla now had 1,646 yards passing with 17 TD's for the season after sitting out the first two games. Guillermo Cordova had 8 receptions for 77 yards to add to his L.A. City Section leading totals of 81 receptions for 927 yards. David Telles rushed for 63 yards on 6 carries and 1 touchdown adding to his all purpose yardage of 1,207 for the season.

Franklin (3-1) will go up against the Lincoln Tigers (2-1) this coming Friday at Franklin in an important Northern League matchup. The Tigers are coming off a bye week.

The Wilson Mules defeated the Sotomayor Wolves 37-0 and will face the Marshall Barristers (1-2) in a 3 pm game at Marshall. The Wolves will have a bye this week.

Franklin Wide Receiver leads L.A. City Section

October 6, 2015

Franklin Panthers junior WR Guillermo Cordova had 15 receptions for 164 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Panthers 21-16 victory over the Marshall Barristers last Friday night. In the prior week against Wilson he had 19 receptions for 202 yards.

After 6 games Cordova now leads the L.A. City Section in all divisions with 68 receptions and 780 yards. In comparison the Division I leader is Devaughn Cooper of Narbonne with 514 yards & Division II leader Justin Rogers of Los Angeles with 668 yards. Franklin is in Division III.

Franklin is 1-1 in Northern League play and will face the Sotomayor Wolves (0-2) this Friday. The game is Franklin's Homecoming with game time at 4pm for JV's and and 7pm for Varsity. Franklin JV's will face West Adams since Sotomayor does not field a JV team

Franklin Panthers Game Summary Week 3

September 15, 2015

Franklin Panthers quarterback Mario Bobadilla played his first game this season last Friday. He led the Panthers to a 19-13 victory over the Bell Eagles. Bobadilla was 17 for 29 passing for 210 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also added 31 yards rushing on 3 carries for 241 total yards. Watch Mario's video highlights against Bell...

Leading the team in receiving was Guillermo Cordova with 8 receptions for 89 yards. David Telles, Leonel Santiago, and Eduardo Garcia each had touchdown receptions.

Running Back David Telles led the team with 17 carries for 99 yards. The Panthers offense had 340 total yards.

The Panthers defense forced 4 turnovers... Guillermo Cordova had 2 interceptions and Erick Nolasco & Isidro Jimenez each recovering a fumble.

Franklin's first year principle and 1985 alumni Regina Marquez-Martinez was awarded the game ball.

Franklin is 1-2 for the season and will face-off against the Bernstein Dragons at home on Friday at 7pm. Northern League matchups will begin the following week (September 25th) when the Panthers face the Wilson Mules in the annual victory bell game at Wilson. Franklin defeated Wilson last year 45-7 at home to gain control of the victory bell. That night the Mules will also be celebrating their 1975 L.A. City Championship with their throwback jerseys.

They defeated West Adams and San Fernando in the Division II playoffs last year but were defeated in the semi-finals by Sylmar. In the off-season Eagle Rock was moved up to Division I in the L.A. City Section. Andy Moran takes over as head coach this year.

The Eagles start the season at home against the Arleta Mustangs (Div. I, 6-0, 10-2 overall) of the East Valley League. Last year the Eagles were defeated by the Mustangs 21-20 at Arleta in their season opener.

Other non-league opponents include Hawkins (Div. II, 2-4, 6-7 overall), Roosevelt (Div. I, 3-3, 5-6 overall), and Chatsworth (Div. II, 1-4, 6-6 overall).

FRANKLIN (2014: 4-2 NL, 6-5 overall, 3rd in NL)
The Panthers coming off a 0-5 2013 season in Northern League competition rebounded with 4 NL wins and a Division II playoff spot behind the leadership of 1st year coach Narciso Diaz. It was their first playoff game since 2010. Franklin lost in the first round against South Gate. In the off-season Franklin was moved down to Division III in the L.A. City Section.

The Panthers start the season with an away game against the North Hollywood Huskies (Div. III, 1-5, 3-7 overall) of the East Valley League. Last year the Panthers defeated the Huskies 35-6 at home in their season opener.

Other non-league opponents include Belmont (Div. III, 5-1, 7-3 overall), Bell (Div. II, 1-5, 2-9 overall), and Bernstein (Div. II, 5-1, 10-3 overall).

LINCOLN (2014: 5-1 NL, 7-5 overall, 2nd in NL)
The Tigers finished runner-up in the NL and made the playoffs in Division II. They defeated Granada Hills in Round 1 and lost to Hamilton in the quarterfinals. Lincoln remains in Division II.

The Tigers start the season at home against the Jefferson Democrats (Div. II, 1-5, 3-7 overall) of the Exposition League. Last Year the Tigers lost to the Democrats 17-14 at Jefferson in their season opener.

Other non-league opponents include Huntington Park (Div. II), Grant (Div. II), and University (Div. II).

MARSHALL (2014: 3-3 NL, 4-6 overall, 4th in NL)
The Barristers finished fourth in the NL and failed to make the playoffs. In the off-season Marshall was moved down to Division III in the L.A. City Section.

Marshall starts the season with an away game against the Belmont Sentinels (Div. III, 5-1, 7-3 overall) of the Central League. Last year the Barristers lost to the Sentinels 23-21 at home in their season opener.

Other non-league opponents include Hamilton (Div. I, 5-0, 11-3 overall), Verdugo Hills (Div. II, 5-1, 7-4 overall), and Hollywood (Div. III, 4-2, 7-4 overall).

SOTOMAYOR (2014: 1-5 NL, 1-9 overall, 6th in NL)
The Wolves are coming into their 3rd year of football, They had the misfortune of playing the 2014 season & the upcoming season on the road due to a problem with their football field. Sotomayor remains in Division III.

Sotomayor starts the season with an away game against the Fremont Pathfinders (Div. III, 0-5, 0-10 overall) of the Exposition League. Last year the Wolves lost to the Monroe Vikings 22-6 at Monroe in their season opener.

Other non-league opponents include Hoover (Div. II, 0-7, 1-9 overall), New Design Watts (Div. III, 1st season), and View Park (Div. II, 1-0, 5-6 overall).

TORRES (2014: 0-6 NL, 0-2 overall, 7th in NL) 5th year 2nd year in the Northern League
The Toros are coming into their 5th year of football and their 2nd year in the NL. Torres remains in Division III.

Torres starts the season with an away game against the Huntington Park Spartans (Div. II, 3-3, 7-4 overall) of the Eastern League. Last year the Toros lost to the Spartans 60-14 at home in their season opener.

Other non-league opponents include Monroe (Div. III, 3-3, 10-4 overall), Bernstein (Div. II, 5-1, 10-3 overall), and Sylmar (Div. I, 6-0, 11-3 overall).

WILSON (2014: 2-4 NL, 3-8 overall, 5th in NL)
The Mules are looking to defeat Franklin and regain the Victory Bell in week 5 when they will wear their 1975 L.A. City Championship throwback jerseys.

Wilson remains in Division III.

Wilson starts the season with an away game against the Roybal Titans (Div. III, 1-5, 2-9 overall) of the Central League. Last year the Mules defeated the Titans 27-12 at home in their season opener.

Other non-league opponents include Santee (Div. II, 3-3, 7-5 overall), Hollywood (Div. III, 4-2, 7-4 overall), and Alhambra (SS Div. X, 2-3, 3-7 overall).
